The Challenge
The downtown Newark, New Jersey, area needed a means of connecting people to its attractions, the rest of the state, and mid-town Manhattan. These new and historic attractions included The New Jersey Performing Arts Center and the Newark Bears minor-league baseball stadium, two facilities whose popularity is on the rise, along with the 350-year old Washington Park. With a rail line that linked these venues to each other and to the century-old Broad Street Station (serving 13,000 NJ Transit riders daily), the state's largest city stood ready to set the standard for urban transportation.
The Solution
The Conti Group brought this vital piece of the puzzle to fruition, as the general contractor for the Newark-Elizabeth Rail Extension. The urban rail line linked the above city attractions, and connected the existing Newark City Subway with the existing NJ Transit Newark-Essex Commuter Rail Line. We were required to maintain access to all existing businesses and residences and complete all installations adjacent to active roadways. We did so while maintaining and protecting all existing traffic flows.
Conti completed all construction in a challenging environment, as the job spanned over 2 miles in busy city streets. On top of this, each of the five stations was constructed with its own unique architectural and aesthetic style.
