The Challenge

A cogeneration facility is a heat engine or power station that generates both electricity and useful heat simultaneously. Westinghouse Electric Corporation (WEC) wanted to construct one of these facilities in Newark, New Jersey to capture the heat created as a by-product of electricity generation (otherwise emitted by conventional power plants) to be used for domestic or industrial heating purposes. The new 134 Megawatt facility needed civil and structural work to get WEC's project started.

The Solution

The Conti Group faced a significant amount of obstacles throughout the course of the project, but was able to formulate real-time solutions to overcome these and get the job done right. The project offered very restrictive site conditions, so the team had to be frugal with space for lay-down areas, crane staging areas, and access to all workstations. In addition, the project was placed under an extremely strict time schedule, resulting in very fast-track work. This led to almost three-hundred plan changes that had to be assimilated into the construction schedule as quickly and effortlessly as possible, but the team was able to incorporate all of them without any loss of time.

Conti also implemented value engineering to provide WEC with significant cost savings, including one concept that offered over $300,000 in direct saving by eliminating the cathodic protection system from the piles.
