The Challenge
When Hurricanes Katrina and Rita left much of New Orleans and the southern Parishes of Louisiana in shambles, an effective Clean and Rehabilitation Plan became imperative. Part of this plan included extensive waste management efforts, due to previously high water levels leaving many homes infected with mold and other harmful bacteria. Contaminants also included such harmful chemicals as poison liquids, oil-based paints, antifreeze, automotive gas, oil, and poison solids, all of which had been scattered during the natural disaster. This project was also time-sensitive due to the extremely dangerous nature of wastes spread around the New Orleans area.
The Solution
The Conti Group aided rehabilitation efforts by taking care of these tasks in a timely manner. Through management of multiple collection crews, Conti was able to profile all bulked and non-bulked waste materials and then package and manifest them for delivery to certified facilities. Pad crews also handled, segregated, bulked, packaged, and shipped over 6,500 commercial hazardous waste and household hazardous waste containers over the course of the project. In total, over 79,012 labor hours were achieved without a lost time incident.
Scope of Work
- Performance of hazardous categorization
- Disposal, sampling, and profiling of bulked & non-bulked waste materials
- Reception, sampling, and characterization of HHW
- Managing of large quantities of firearms, military ordinance and ammunition
