Done Once, Done Right

Dominion Energy Fairless Power Plant

With enough power to supply almost 300,000 homes, the Fairless Power Plant is a chief electricity provider in Falls Township, PA.

The Challenge

With enough power to supply almost 300,000 homes, the Fairless Power Plant is a chief electricity provider in Falls Township, PA. As the plant's owner, Dominion Energy (DE) needed help with reinforcing the Fairless building's foundation support. DE's objective was to contract a company that would safely and effectively install a number of piles, including all necessary pre-auguring, removals, and extra installations.

The Solution

The Conti Group self-performed all production work to accommodate DE's pile-driving needs. The team installed 155,000 linear feet of 12" diameter steel pipes, reinforced steel pile cages, totaling 2,294. This involved work prior to installation, such as pouring 4,600 cubic yards of structural pile concrete and installing 975,000 pounds of reinforcing steel pipe cages to provide additional support to the piles. In addition, pre-auguring of over 80 piles was necessary due to inconvenient utility locations.

Conti performed over 40 Pile Driver Analysis (PDA) tests to ensure that all piles had been driven properly end effectively, guaranteeing the structural stability of Fairless's power plant foundation.

Scope of Work

  • Steel pipe installation
  • Concrete pouring
  • Installation of drive fit splices
  • Pre-auguring
  • Extraction of existing H-Piles
  • Performance of PDA tests
  • Installation of load test piles
  • Compression and lateral load tests
