The Challenge
The Bronx is home to over 1.4 million New Yorkers, and the need for housing is always growing. Recognizing this, the City of New York looked to build two new apartment complexes called Courtlandt Corners I & II in the late 2000s. The sites on which they were looking to build these new sat on opposite sides of East 161st Street, which was where a gas station used to operate. Before construction could begin, both sites would have to undergo environmental remediation to remove contaminants left behind in the soil from the gas station. Owners ERM Remediation and Construction Management hired Conti to reverse this damage.
The Solution
The Conti Group made the construction of Courtlandt Corners I & II possible by remediating the sites to all ERM specifications despite significant challenges posed by the urban city setting. Due to E 161st St.'s constant traffic, Conti had to create a very specific plan to facilitate excavation, dewatering, and transport within a tight schedule. This was accomplished using 15-20 trucks hauling soil in between 30 and 40 trips per day, as well as work in extended hours and around traffic schedules. Conti also encountered an obstacle during dewatering operations, as remediation required excavation depths of 28 feet and the sites' close proximity to the Hudson River created 13-foot water depths. To mitigate this and other water-related issues, the team installed 22 shallow wells with a sump and reconfigured the manifold 4-1inch PVC piping system to migrate water to an on-site temporary water treatment system.

- Excavation of contaminated soils
- Installation of a water treatment plant
- Use of hydraulic pumps
- Backfilling with clean material
- Tie-backs
- Fast-tracked project schedule
- Pile Driving
- Site survey of adjacent building foundations
